The garage door spring is the single part that does the heavy lifting, and it is the part most likely to leave you stuck. A double door weighs 150 to 200 pounds, and one or two tightly wound springs counterbalance almost all of that so the opener, or your arm, only has to move a few pounds. When a spring breaks, that balance is gone in an instant. The door becomes a dead weight, the opener strains and stops, and the car behind it is trapped. This is the most common repair we run in Aurora, and the one we are built to handle same-day.
There are two spring systems. Torsion springs mount on a steel shaft above the door and are the standard on most modern doors. Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on either side and are common on older installations. Both store a large amount of energy, which is exactly why replacing one is dangerous work. A torsion spring that slips while being wound can break a hand, and the winding bars and cones must be handled in a set order. Roughly a fifth of serious garage injuries involve spring work done without the right tools.
Springs are rated in cycles, where one cycle is the door going up and back down once. A standard spring is good for about 10,000 cycles. For a family that uses the garage as the main way in and out, cycling the door four or five times a day, that works out to about seven to ten years. Homes with more drivers reach the number sooner. When we replace a broken spring, we replace both springs at the same time, because the second is the same age and the same number of cycles behind, and changing only one almost guarantees a second call within months.
Matching the spring is where a hardware-store part usually goes wrong. The correct spring is specified by three numbers: the wire diameter, the inside coil diameter, and the wound length. Get any of them wrong and the door is either too heavy to lift or so light it flies up and strains the opener, and either way the new spring wears out fast. We carry the full range on the truck and size the spring to your exact door on the spot, so the balance is right and the replacement lasts.
A correctly balanced door is also easier on everything else. When the springs carry the weight properly, the opener draws less current and its gears and trolley last longer, the cables and rollers see less strain, and the door does not slam on the way down. After we fit new springs we test the balance by hand, set the opener force, and confirm the door holds halfway without creeping. That final check is the difference between a spring swap and a repair that protects the rest of the door.
What's included
Torsion spring replacement
The modern standard, mounted on the shaft above the door. We size the spring by wire, coil and length to your exact door, replace both, and rebalance.
Extension spring replacement
Common on older doors and running along the side tracks. We replace the springs and the safety cables that keep a broken extension spring from becoming a projectile.
Both springs as a pair
When one breaks, the other is the same age and close behind. Replacing both in the same visit saves a second call and keeps the door balanced evenly.
Correct sizing, not a close guess
The wrong spring either overloads the opener or sends the door flying. We match wire diameter, coil size and length so the balance and the lifespan are right.
Full balance and safety check
After fitting, we test the door by hand, set the opener force, and confirm the door holds at the halfway point rather than creeping up or dropping.
How the job runs
- Call, 24 hours Describe the bang and the stuck door. A broken spring is easy to confirm on the phone, and we schedule a same-day visit across the Aurora area.
- Measure the spring The technician measures the wire, coil and length so the replacement matches your door exactly rather than being a near miss.
- Replace in pairs, safely Tension is released in a controlled way, both springs are fitted, and the cables are checked at the same time.
- Rebalance and test The door is balanced by hand, the opener force is set, and the whole system is cycled before we leave.
